Coffee and nature are connected, it provides CarmoCoffees’ livelihood, and dreams. Now it’s time to return to nature what “she” has always given to us.
Unfortunately, waste management is not valued in most of the global south countries, and Brazil is one of them. You will usually find people just leaving the trash outside, without any division of recyclable or organic materials. But we are trying to change this way of life.
At least 400 thousand Brazilian families survive by waste management and picking. At São Lourenço – a small town beside Carmo de Minas – around 15 families depends directly on recycling, with a very low income.
In a partnership with the cooperative “Amigos do Meio Ambiente “ – Friends of the Environment, which is a waste management organization in São Lourenço, all the recyclable material from our offices will be directed towards their work. Also, as we export most of our recyclable material (such as boxes, sample packaging, and others) we will compensate them for every Kg of waste exported. As an example: If we’ve used 100kg of recyclable material in a month, we will compensate them for all of this, impacting directly on these families’ lives with an extra income.
And what about organic waste?
That’s also an important matter. The bigger part of our waste is during the cupping, the coffee ground leftovers were thrown away. Now, in a partnership with BioCicle, a company situated at São Lourenço, we built two composters at the backside of our office. All the residue from the cupping will become a rich organic fertilizer, which will be used on coffee planting – transforming the coffee ground into life.
In 2017, we started a reforestation project in the permanent preservation areas (APP) of our processing center in Pedra Branca.
In the area, all sections of the APP were degraded due to the cattle-raising activity carried out previously on the farm.
The recovery is being made with the planting of native trees. Overall, more than 2000 seedlings have already been planted. Soon, another stage of planting will be carried out.
Only few people understand the relationship between bees and agriculture. The Brazilian coffee producer in general does not usually consort other activities with coffee. Things usually make no sense when not explained.
75% of economically cultivated species need animal pollination. Beens are the most adapted to this duty.
SMS wants to explain how the connection between bees and agriculture can bring significant benefits. Crops like coffee are not highly bee dependent, so without bees there will still be coffee production, but the thing is that when we put more bees in this system we increase coffee production.
In specialized scientific experiments, with isolated flowers the decrease is 28% compared to natural pollination. Putting hives inside the coffee plots as a productivity boost feature can bring them profitability and quality to their production.
With this, EISA, with Nespresso (AAA) and CarmoCoffees, proposes to its partners the implementation of a project called “BEE SMS AAA DO SUL DE MINAS”, with the objective of diversifying, increasing the income of producers, demonstrating and quantifying the quality and quantity of pollination in coffee plantations.
The project will donate to the coffee producers chosen by the sustainability team hives for raising bees, courses, practical training, PPE for capturing and collecting honey, a machine for processing and the possibility of purchasing the first production.
The bees will be captured in the environment and fed in the hives with syrup for 60 days to adapt and reproduce, or they can be purchased at the producer’s expense. After this period they will be transferred to the other boxes where they will form new castes.
The numbers will be monitored in partnership with researchers to quantify and qualify the difference in pollination in coffee, providing more reliability to the project.
Obtaining an environmental certification consists of developing practices that provide better protection and care for the environment, the people involved in the processes and also the product with which one works.
Today we are SMS Certified and we have other two verifications from major companies in the industry: AAA Nespresso and C.A.F.E PRACTICES Starbucks.
We also are Rainforest Alliance certified, an important certification that guarantees the complete traceability of acquired coffees, and organic certification, which aims to supply coffee without the use of pesticides, ensuring quality processing and storage.
